THE STORY SO FAR.

Bernard Leach: The Bridge Between East and West .

Bernard Leach (1887–1979) is widely celebrated as the "father of British studio pottery." After returning to Tokyo in 1909, he studied ceramics under Shigekichi Ogata (Kenzan VI) and forged a historic, lifelong partnership with Shoji Hamada. In 1920, Leach and Hamada established the legendary Leach Pottery in St Ives, Cornwall.

The Devon Education Lineage: Bernard "Bernie" Forrester (1908–1990)

In 1932, Bernard "Bernie" Forrester joined the Leach Pottery team . By 1934, . Forrester's educational influence eventually expanded to other schools throughout Devon. Driven by a deep aversion to mass production, he maintained a strict artistic philosophy: never make the exact same piece twice . He passed this uncompromising, soulful approach to clay directly down to his students—one of whom, in his youth, was Steve Neil-Howie.

The Lineage Returns to Japan

Steve studied in Devon for three years under the guidance of Bernard Forrester , completely absorbing the DNA of the traditional Leach lineage. In what marks a beautiful, full-circle homecoming for this artistic heritage, Steve has brought these time-honored British techniques back to Japan. For the past 9 years, he has been operating his own studio in Japan, previously having made pottery in Surrey, England " The English Pottery " (known locally as the Ingirisu Togeien or British Pottery Garden ), nestled in the historic samurai castle town of Chofu, Shimonoseki, which recently he added a small Cafe to. Steve is 66 and as he says "another 30 years is still ahead!"
