A Nine Day Pottery Course in Japan!

Steve Howie | 03 April, 2023

A Nine Day Pottery Course in Japan!

Hi, I am Steve ill be your teacher and mentor for nine days of spectacular pottery fun. I am a permanent resident of this amazing country and I speak the Kings English! My first Pottery teacher for three years was Bernie Forrester he was a student of Bernard Leach. The father of modern Pottery. You are in good hands.

First things first, you have to go to the "shop" in this website and book your preferred dates. Once we receive payment through Shopify we send you a PDF info pack containing a detailed breakdown of your itinerary. This cuts back on lots of requests for more info. This is a comprehensive pack that you will enjoy reading.

You will also get  a info sheet about your abilities and experience plus any specific requests or needs you have. In that pack is recommended cheap close local hotels and a close by expensive luxury hotel! All walking distance.

Please fill that abilities and experience sheet in and email it to sh.englishpottery@gmail.com

On day one you arrive at the The English Pottery in Chofu , an old Samurai Town near Shimonoseki. This is in the famous Hagi Yaki prefecture of Yamaguchi. Yaki means style of pottery.

We give you a basic instruction on where everything is, what time lunch is (onigiri and bento boxes) and start you in two groups, the first hand building and the second throwing. Before that I give a 30 minute talk about Japan and its Pottery, specifically the types and styles. My pottery is next to lots of cafes and temples that are just wonderful to look at.

We only allow nine students so everyone gets plenty of time doing both sides of pottery. I will show you how to make real Japanese pottery or if you want how to throw big bowls! It is your week so I will adapt to your needs.

If you are a beginner with no experience do not worry we will teach you.

If your an advanced student or a potter then also don't worry we will hone your skills.

The first few days are "making"as we call it in the pottery building then on day four you go off to Saga to see a famous pottery village.

Day five is spent learning trimming the Japanese way if you want to, plus a decoration course starts. Some will want to carry on throwing and making. The next day its final firing then a rest as the following day you go to the famous Pottery Town of Hagi! The last day is glazing and then your free to explore other part of Japan.

We use express postage to send your final fired pieces to you, so they might get home before you!

A trip like this will change your view of Pottery and hopefully inspire you to bigger and better things.

We all look forward to meeting you in Japan!

Sensei Steve, The English Pottery in Chofu.
